Proper care for the lush flowering of adenium at home

Unusual for our conditions, the adenium bottle tree appeared as a room culture relatively recently and quickly gained genuine interest by a lover of succulents. And absolutely deserved.

Growing adenium at home is becoming increasingly fashionable. Nowadays, it is increasingly possible to meet a desert rose at the florists in the house, it is also adenium.

Since caring for this flower is quite simple, it is gaining more and more popularity every day. But in order for the adenium to please the eye with an unusually beautiful flowering, you need to follow some rules for caring for the plant at home.

How to care?

Lighting

Adenium refers to photophilous plants.

Unlike most other indoor flowers, it does not need shading. The flower feels great on the south and southeast side. The more light he receives in the summer, the brighter and more magnificent his flowering will be.

It is advisable to adhere to the light regime close to the natural habitat of the adenium. A flower is common in the equatorial zone. In the period from autumn to spring, the plant needs daylight hours for 13-14 hours, so artificial lighting will have to be done.

How to water?

At the time of active growth, adenium requires a large amount of water. Watering is temperature dependent. When the cold comes, it is worth reducing the watering of the flower. Excessive humidity will lead to illness or the death of the root system. In summer, watering the adenium is necessary when the topsoil is absolutely dry after the previous watering. If in the winter in the room where the flower is cool, watering should be limited.

During the care of the adenium at home in the summer, they provide regular watering - watered immediately after the soil has completely dried. In winter, watered gently and little. If the plant hibernates at a temperature of 15 to 20 ° C, then watering is carried out only after the soil has dried.

When wintering in a colder place, watered either very rarely, or completely stop watering. In winter, young sprouts of adenium are very limitedly watered. After spring awakening, it is advisable to water the plants for the first time 2-3 weeks after the appearance of buds and the start of adenium growth.

Temperature

Adenium is a heat resistant plant. A temperature of 32-36 degrees is quite acceptable for a flower. Small drops in temperature do not affect the flower in any way, but if there is a long cooling of the air, up to 17-20 degrees, then the adenium inhibits its growth. At a temperature of 38 degrees and with low humidity, the flower becomes bad. Without proper moisture, the plant cannot tolerate such heat.

The soil

The soil mixture for adenium is loose and light so that it can pass moisture and oxygen well. Acidity for Adeium should not exceed 5-7 pH. If you have acquired soil, and it is very dense and poor, you can mix the earth yourself:

  1. five parts of the finished substrate are taken;
  2. three parts of sheet land with a high content of humus and two parts of river sand.

What kind of pot is needed?

Adenium feels great in both ceramic and plastic containers. The basic rule is to match the size of the flower and the capacity under it. Young adenium feels great in deep pots.

For a growing plant, choose a pot whose height is equal to the diameter of the top of the circumference of the container. This must be done, as the growing root branches out on different sides.

What and how to feed?

Fertilizers begin to give the flower in early spring and until autumn.. It will be sufficient to add the necessary substances with a periodicity of a month. Carefully monitor the concentration of the solution, it should not exceed 2%. You can also spray the leaves, but then the fertilizer should be three times weaker.

Mineral organic species are great. Organic fertilizers, such as chicken or pigeon droppings, are often taken as top dressings. The frequency of top dressing with mineral supplements is once a week. Concentration is worth taking one-fourth of what is written on the package. Organic fertilizers are used every 3-4 weeks.

Often, gardeners buy ready-made supplements. In specialty stores you can find good fertilizers for adenium.

We’ll talk about some of them.

The use of cytokinin paste

Application:

  1. Dip a needle into alcohol.
  2. Then you need to scratch the sleeping bud of a flower.
  3. We process several kidneys.
  4. Top with paste.
  5. Every day we spray these places with water.
  6. On the tenth day, leaflets will already begin to emerge.

How to apply mycorrhiza?

This drug is made by watering or spraying the plant. If vaccination passes through the soil, then you need to make a couple of small holes near the plant and pour the drug into them. Mycorrhiza is often used when transplanting to a new place.. Since the vaccine helps the plant adapt faster. After vaccination, development and growth are accelerated.

How to vaccinate?

Vaccination is an effective method of breeding adeniums. Vaccination is useful for combining a beautiful flower with an unusual form of caudex for growing several types of flowers on one plant, and can also improve the shape of the plant.

Now the number of these plants in the collections of our fans is growing very quickly and many, starting with the cultivation of adenium from seeds, are trying more sophisticated methods of propagating adeniums. To increase the decorativeness of the flower, it is inoculated. On one plant, flowers of various shades can bloom. For example, an adult adenium is taken and branches of other varieties are grafted onto it. It is best to be vaccinated in the spring, when the plant has an active phase of sap flow.

Pick

Pickling seedlings is carried out after several pairs of true leaves appear. There are no strict rules for picking. Therefore, if you want small adeniums to grow faster, you can produce it at the age of 1-2 months. Three-month-old sprouting is recommended.. At this point, the root system and plant are already well formed.

We offer you to watch a video on how to pick an adenium:

When do I need to transplant?

The young flower develops rapidly and actively, and every day its root system takes up more and more space in the pot. There will come a time when the roots will be very crowded so that this does not happen, adenium is transplanted in the spring into a larger pot.

After the transplant, do not fill in the roots, let the plant get used to a new place.

Cropping and shaping the crown

To make the crown thicker and more branched, flower growers resort to the formation and pruning of adenium. Often this is a necessary measure, because in most plants the development of the apex is predominant and does not allow other shoots to develop, except for the central one.

About trimming and forming adenium is discussed in a separate article.

Transfer

Adenium is transplanted in early spring. The main thing during this process is not to damage the roots. They must be cleaned of the old soil carefully, it is better to rinse under a small stream of water.

If the root is accidentally damaged, it must immediately be treated with a special preparation and given time to allow the root to dry out. After transplanting, the plant is not immediately watered, adenium takes time to get used to a new place.

If your adenium has slowed down, do not rush to transplant itbecause There are many reasons why the plant does not develop, and in the case of adenium, the tightness of the pot is the latest of them. Unfortunately, novice adenium growers consider the opposite and instantly transplant the adenium into a larger pot, thereby exacerbating the problem.

What to change after the formation of caudex?

Care after the formation of adenium caudex consists in more frequent than usual moderate watering and regular checking of the position of the roots. For this, the plant is transplanted twice a year, spreading rhizomes and removing unnecessary ones.

How to prepare for wintering?

In winter, you need to be especially careful in caring for adenium. Since this plant requires daylight hours of about 13-14 hours, and in winter it is very difficult to do, resort to stagnation of the flower. Stagnation is the slowdown of all processes in a plant.

To do this, change the conditions of detention:

  • lower temperature;
  • humidity and increase the intervals between watering.

The acceptable temperature of the content of adenium in the spring is + 11 ... +12 degrees. If it is above +15, then it will be necessary to stop watering for a sufficiently long period of time to enter into stagnation. The minimum temperature should not fall below +5 degrees. If you contain adenium in a negative environment, the plant may die.

Between watering it is necessary to dry the soil very much. The frequency of watering will depend on temperature, and will be 7-20 days. Sometimes they practice flower maintenance with only one watering for the whole winter.

In winter, humidity should be low. Top dressing in the cold season is not carried out. The first time that it will be necessary to do top dressing is the exit of the adenium from the state of stagnation.

Flowering "Desert Roses"

The first flowering is influenced by many factors, but usually the adenium blooms in the second year. There are species that can bloom only four years later, and there are times when seedlings aged 7-8 months suddenly bloom. Adenium inflorescences of various colors:

  1. bright red;
  2. maroon;
  3. light pink;
  4. white.

In shape, the flowers resemble a gramophone.

Diseases and Pests

The most common parasites in adenium:

  • aphid;
  • ticks;
  • root and mealybug.

Most often, the flower affects the root mealybug. He likes dry and light soils. The white coating that covered the roots is a testament to the fact that a parasite has wound up on the plant. We noticed light waxy discharge on the leaves, which means that a mealybug settled on the adenium. Such drugs as Fitoverm, Aktara will help from him.

The most dangerous adversary is the spider mite. He quickly adapts to changing conditions and is resistant to the means of struggle against him.

Mite viruses are also very harmful to the plant, which constantly introduce the flower into a state of illness. Virus in a plant causes distortion of leaves, flowers. Unfortunately, such adenium is not treated, it needs to be destroyed.

More information about the diseases and pests of adenium is written here.

Conclusion

Adenium is an exotic flower, gaining more and more popularity every day among flower growers. Proper care of the plant will give a beautiful decorative flowering that will delight the eye.
